From Struggle to Strength

rock climber.jpeg

From The Beginning

In 2007, following a failed suicide attempt and feeling isolated by bipolar disorder, I joined the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA). Together with a small group of dedicated individuals, I established the DBSA Northridge Chapter at Northridge Hospital in an effort to create a safe, supportive space for those struggling with mental health challenges.

My journey to this point was shaped by profound experiences. As a combat motion picture cameraman in 1972, I faced intense pressures, and in 1973, while stationed in Germany, I returned home after losing my mother to suicide. Over the next 25 years, I built multiple companies and maintained a high-energy lifestyle, which, in hindsight, was fueled by undiagnosed bipolar disorder, mania, and substance abuse. After multiple suicide attempts and a hospitalization in 1979, I was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2001.

Despite medication, I continued to struggle with depression. The turning point came in 2007, leading to my involvement with DBSA. Founding DBSA Northridge connected me with compassionate peers from all walks of life, offering acceptance, empathy, and a sense of purpose. This community became a vital source of hope and healing for me and countless others.

Wishing you a peaceful journey,

Jeff Fox, Founder

Comment (optional)

Depression is a major global health concern. It plays a significant role in suicide, which is among the leading causes of death worldwide—especially in younger populations. Moreover, depression can contribute to other health problems, such as heart disease, further increasing its impact on mortality rates.

U.S. Suicide Statistics (CDC)
Every Year

  • 12.3 Million People Think About Suicide

  •  3.5 Million People Plan a Suicide Attempt

  • 1.7 Million People Attempt Suicide

  • 50,000+ People Die by Suicide

Depression is an invisible killer and is preventable. Despite its widespread impact, the link between depression and suicide continues to be shrouded in stigma. Addressing this stigma is essential to saving lives, fostering awareness, and building a compassionate support network for those in need.

The financial toll of suicide on society is also costly. In 2020, suicide and nonfatal self-harm cost the nation over $500 billion in medical costs, work loss costs, value of statistical life, and quality of life costs.
